A road derailleur can be made to clear a mountain cassette by screwing in the b-tension screw, replacing that with a longer screw, custom derailleur hanger, etc, but the jockey wheel will ride far away from the cassette in the middle cogs, so shifting can be slow (as in, you need to shift a little past the next position to get the chain to move off its present cog, then adjust back to make it quiet -- common practice before indexing and Hyperglide but actually rather difficult on indexed shifters).
But the Jamis Coda Elite comes with an XT derailleur, so that's already sorted.
