if you're talking full-on winter sorels then i'd say you're best off with powergrips. i tried jamming my feet into clips last winter to no avail. another option that worked well for me was bmx pedals with the gripper-screw things on them. i think i'm going that route again this year...
I have my doubts that my "big" winter boots will fit into any kind of straps, except snowshoe straps. Most of the time I wear garrison boots though, and they're not
that much bigger than shoes. I think I'm gonna go with the powergrips.

And of course, the more I think about it, the more I want to do to it. Has anyone ever had different dropouts welded onto their frame? Was it expensive? The dropouts I have now are really short and it's limiting my gearing options.
ALSO: What are you guys running for ratios in the winter? I run 70 GI in the summer, but I'd like a little more torque to get through the heavy bits. I don't need to go fast, but I don't want to be going at walking speed either! I'm thinking somewhere around 60 but I'd like to hear what you guys are running.
