Help! BoB bag handle kaput

I tried search function for BoB bag repairs, but came up with nothing, so here it goes..............

For a recent tour, I borrowed a Bob trailor & the big yellow water proof bag that goes with it.
On the last day, I picked the bag up by the handles, and riiiiip - the fabric on one of the handles shredded, right where the handle is attached to the bag. I mean shredded - just threads hanging.

I called & emailed the BoB Co. asking if they could fix the handle, or replace the handle, or if they had a repair kit, or any suggestions at all. Both times the said to take it to a luggage shop or to an industrial stitcher and have it stitched back on. I said there is nothing to stitch, it is shredded to right below where the plastic tube part of the handle starts, and besides, stitching would compromise the water proofness of the bag (wouldn't it?) Well, they said, that's all the suggestions we got.

Anyone else have this happen? I'd hate to return the bag to it's owner with a broken handle, or a bad repair job. Or do I have to break down and buy a new bag? Any ideas?
Thanks, MJ
