Adjusting preload on suspension fork?

I just purchased a Raleigh hybrid with a SR Suntour NEX4000 suspension fork on it. I know that these are very low end forks but this is only for recreational riding. How do I adjust the preload on it? It has a thumbscrew on the top of each fork leg that clicks as it is turned. I know that to the left is looser and to the right is tighter and that I should have both adjusted to the same amount of clicks. But how do I know when I have the preload set right for me?

Thanks to all who can help.
