Between the global village and the complexity of modern manufactured goods, "what country was this finished good made in?" has no simple answer.

Uh, no. The rules for "country of origin for an imported item" are WAY different than the strict legal requirements for "Made in USA". The US Federal Trade Commission has a big web site explaining all this if anyone is that interested.

Your Salsa could be labeled "Assembled in USA from Imported Components" and/or "Designed in USA". My Cannondale can (and does) have a "Made in USA" label on the frame, but Cannondale cannot claim that the bike is made in USA because of the many imported components.
