Nonsense, countersteering IS an unconscious technique, it's what you do every dang time you turn your bike. The OP didn't crash because he didn't countersteer. He lost traction. It's possible that his weight was too far back, but there's any number of things that can cause a crash. Did you hit a spot of gravel or sand that they didn't?
EDIT: Jynx got to it first, I see. I'm glad I'm not the only person who gets a little crazy when people talk about countersteering like it's some advanced technique that you need to learn for better cornering. Argh.
Seriously OP, take turns like that in the drops. It'll go a long way toward making you safer.
