I ride in a city. 11 miles twice a day and about 1500 feet of elevation gain just getting to and from work. I definitely need hydration and thus have a water bottle which I can refill if necessary. At least it is mostly downhill on the way home :-)
Then after work, I ride for fun. Sometimes I take water bottle, sometimes not.
5+ miles is not crazy. Try it sometime.
