I can hear very little above 15 mph, regardless of whether or not I'm wearing headphones. I'd rather wear them and focus on music instead of on the extraneous sounds of traffic and wind. If I need to see what's behind me, I don't trust my ears; I look behind me. I don't need to hear "you" nearly as much as I need "you" to drive safely and not try to pass me with three inches to spare. Drivers don't rely on their ears to "hear" other drivers; that's what mirrors are for. That's why you look behind you before turning. Newsflash: it's no different on a bicycle.
