i was basically running that on my cross bike when my front shifter died. 1x8 was fine, no problems. when i went to 1x10, upgraded to 10spd and was waiting for parts, i found that my chain would shift on its own between my front chain rings. this would only happen when i was in the smallest or largest chain rings. you could throw a bash guard on and move the 42 to the inside ring spot.
