As far as stopping/starting, you said that you don't get off the seat...now is that because your scoliosis and knocked knees make such a repetitive activity painful? If it's not painful I would say you just have to practice this on and off motion as it really is the easiest way to go about getting on and off. Are you still trying to adjust to clipless pedals as well? I find people have a lot trouble learning clipping in and out and they think about that task too much, and don't focus on the dismount which leads to the obligatory failure to unclip at a light and fall to the side.
BTW, I've decided to, for the second time, give up clipless. I can't get into the pedals because of the 23 degree toe out I have on the right foot. Sigh, I guess I'll never be a "Real Cyclist."
