I'd try some of the big plastic toe clips:



They don't look great, but work just fine and provide a more solid platform to pull up on for some.

I made a little leather patch that routes under the toe clip and through the strap, so it sits under the part of the tow clip that you pull up one. I never had any problems as bad as yours, but it helps me get the strap nice and comfy.
