if your shifter isn't indexed, it should work--the range of your shifter's motion will be limited by the limiting screws. if it's indexed, it probably won't work in indexed mode because of the cog spacing...just set it to friction and you should still be ok.
I don't think you can say either way. Spacing wasn't really standardized back then so it would theoretically shift 5 cogs, possibly very badly. But you won't get 6 gears even if it does work.
