For me the immediate goal is no new bike for 2 years! And I don't see myself owning more than 2 bikes.

The other criteria I have for myself are:
-Once I'm able to ride one of the routes around my house at 20mph... (right now my personal best after 3 months of riding is 17.0mph)
-Once I log 10,000 miles
-Price of final bike will be in the $3000--and will most likely be a FELT or ORBEA

Do you guys ever plan out your purchases or set goals for your next bike so that you keep your eyes on the prize?

I generally try to hold off on purchasing a new bike until I have a really clear idea what the limitations of my older bikes are with respect to what I'm trying to accomplish. At the moment I'm mostly doing two things. Commuting and doing long steady distances. I have an adequate commuter bike (an old Peugeot road bike with friction shifters). My more modern road bike (a Raleigh Supercourse) isn't really well suited for the thing I'm primarily using it for (centuries).

So my goal is having two bikes, one for each of my purposes. I'm halfway there. At the moment I'm considering a Surley LHT or a Trek 520. Neither will drive me to bankruptcy, and I suspect that at 57 years old I won't be impulsively changing my mind and going with a fixie instead :-)
