Don't blindly adjust the stop screws. Go to Bicycle Mechanics forum. Read the sticky New Posters - please READ THIS thread. Look at the Park Tools site linked there for how to set up a FD. Go through the whole procedure.

Then you can fix your buddies FD, too.
