I assume that this is where the problem developed in the first place. Well I fixed that, and then fooled with the tension adjustment some more, and made it even worse! Then I fooled with the limit screws, but that didn't help at all. Basically, right now the chain will only go on the smallest ring. However, even when the brifter is all the way shifted over (should be in the smallest ring), the indicator on the top of the brifter shows that it is in the middle ring. If I shift up on the brifter, the FD does not move enough to bump the chain to the middle ring, but the indicator shows the Fd as being in the big ring position. However, I can't shift it anymore although I know there must be another click of shifting. Sorry if this description is confusing to you, it is to me too. I am completely lost, and right now my plan is to take it to my LBS tomorrow and have them adjust it

Best thing I've read all morning.

If this is a new bike, it's nost likely the cable tension. New canbles will stretch and that will mess with the shifting and the braking. Typically, when you buy a new bike they will tell you to bring it back after about a month and they will reset and check all this.
