Like most things - it depends. I had a maniscus "bucket" tear 15 years ago. Was walking without a crutch or cane in a day but it took a long time to get back to "normal". Mine was a big tear though. I am now getting some arthritis in that knee which shows up at the beginning of the ride before the joint is fully warmed up.
