"Chamois" is a goat like animal and the term is used to describe it's hide. So a "chamois" is a specific variety of leather. In the USA, it generally refers to sheepskin or lambskin tanned only with oils.

Since there aren't any (or very few) shorts/bibs/etc. made these days with this variety of leather, the correct term is "pad."
