Cranking / Grinding noise

Hello

I am a total newbie to biking. I moved to Montreal and bought a road bike to commute around during the summer monthes to get in shape and save money and be all eco friendly (I must admit I love it!).

I started with a $75 beater bike that was falling apart before investing in a sensible road bike, I got a Nakamura Road Bike (Elite Road) 16 speed half price at end of summer sale from Sportscheck.

Its not even a month old and I have begun to experience a little trouble with it which makes me think the Sportscheck guys didn't really look it over well before I bought it...

Sometimes when I change the front gear, the chain falls off, which I find weird on a new bike...

Also within the last 2-3 weeks I have begun to notice that occassionally while pedaling I hear a slight creaking noise that seems to be coming from the crank or the bottom bracket or the pedals. The past 2-3 days that noise has developed into a steady creak and tonight I felt 2-3 sharp vibrations like grinding metal when I pedal

Any advice? I changed the pedals when I bought the bioke but I'm 95% They aren't cross threaded..(They only go on one way no??)

Thanks
