Nice looking bike in good condition. I bet that your left hand drive problem is just a loose or worn out crank cotter pin. If the pin is loose, the left hand crank arm will flop back and forth. I would suggest using a hammer to drive the cotter pin a bit deeper (non nut end) and then tighten the nut on the other end of the cotter pin.
