I recommend you check the chain length using the big/big method plus one inch I described above, remembering to not run the chain through the rear derailleur when you do. It's pretty much a fool-proof way to size a chain on a derailleur-equipped bike.

I wouldn't mess around with trying to base chain length on the size of a gap between the derailleur and the chain-
