I've been riding in the early morning (5:45 - 6:30) here in NJ, and it has been DARK! I have a headlight, and a blinking rear taillight, and stick to the main street with lights. The thing to always remember is cars are NOT looking for cyclists when turning, or going through stop signs. If they don't see car headlights, they tend to just go. You have to really be careful and don't assume a car or truck can see you.
I also got my first flat the other morning when I rolled over some small metal thing because I couldn't see it. It's a different world in the dark!
