That "when do I get in the left lane" question is a real puzzle. I try and ride the speed of traffic and take the whole lane. But if somebody trys to squeeze by, what can you do, stick out your elbow? If I think traffic is too dangerous, I'll turn left early at a light, then ride on the sidewalk to get to my real turn. But I've been pulled over for riding on the sidewalk - and the speedlimit there is 35 so people think it is ok to go 50 if traffic is light. Ugh, what a connundrum. Ride safe!!!
