No one is saying to run two chainrings. The "obnoxious ratio" is total bs too, you can always just get another cog to make it less "obnoxious". Plus many cranksets on ebay don't even come with chainrings. I know my shimano 600s didn't. Hell, my pista even came with the RDs which can hold two chainrings.
