cutting Formula flip flop axle

I just built some track wheels using Mavic Open Pros and 32 hole Formula high flange hubs with 3x DT Competition spokes. This goes on my vintage Carabela (Cinelli-esque) 70's track frame. The bike is cool and will be coming out in the fixed gear gallery Monday maybe. The bike looks vintage with Cineli 1R stem and Cinelli Milano track bars, but I didn't realize that the Formula hubs come with extra wide axles for converting road bikes to fixed gears. It looks odd. Has anyone cut down the rear axles so that they don't stick out past the hub nuts? Do I just hack away with a saw, and then spin off the nuts to clean up the threads? Suggestions?
