Hoping to hear from someone who has ridden the Outer Hebrides. Am planning to ride Barra to Stornoway sometime after Boxing Day. I am planning this as a 3 day ride with overnights in B&Bs. Questions and concerns as follows:

1. Suggestions on clothing and description of weather that time of year.
2. Should I hire a cycle or take my own?
3. Is terrain and road surface suited for road bikes or mountain bikes?
4. Is there still ferry crossings from Oban to Barra.

So far I'm riding alone but would welcome some company but no more than 4 riders.

Suggestions, advice and recommendations will be most appreciated.
