A few days ago I was talking about changing out the drivetrain on my Cannondale, throwing out gear ratios, Ultegra this and that, aluminum frame vs steel frame, etc. His eyes began to glaze over a little, he smiled and said, "that's really nice, honey." We laughed and moved on.
Surely (yes, I'm talking to you, surely) by now you've both realized that golf and cycling are equals when it comes to schwag purchasing. Those "woods" he bought? Your new wheels, shoes or jersey. Each item contributing greatly to both of your sporting legacies.

I also have the answer to the question of why they are called a wood when they're made of metal. The answer is they used to be made of wood when the game became popularized back in the 1800's. It's same thing as why a bike seat is called a saddle, which goes back to the earliest days of cycling when they used a horse saddle for sitting on the wood frame velocipede. [insert appropriate smiley]

I don't have an answer to the OP's question, but I believe Gene Simmons* would have plenty to say on the subject.

* for those who don't know, Gene Simmons could lecture for days on the subject of why men shouldn't marry until they are willing and able to pay the price.
