I also have the answer to the question of why they are called a wood when they're made of metal. The answer is they used to be made of wood when the game became popularized back in the 1800's. It's same thing as why a bike seat is called a saddle, which goes back to the earliest days of cycling when they used a horse saddle for sitting on the wood frame velocipede. I don't have an answer to the OP's question, but I believe Gene Simmons* would have plenty to say on the subject.
* for those who don't know, Gene Simmons could lecture for days on the subject of why men shouldn't marry until they are willing and able to pay the price.
...and don't call me Shirley.
My husband actually did give me the woods explanation. And we've had the debate, "so if they're not really made of wood why not just call them something else? Makes no sense to me." It's just one of those golf things, I guess. Kind of like having to have a special rain jacket for golf that looks like a normal jacket but cannot be worn for anything other than golf. The saddle thing makes much more sense. A saddle is a saddle, but metal is not wood.
And don't think that the fact that he just bought two new woods was lost on me. I know that I'm well on my way to a new drivetrain on my Cannondale for that

Good luck with the shared hobbies, ku... my husband is getting out on the bike a little this year, which is pretty cool.
