The SunTour pedals are nicer and their hubs are less maintenance but still use a freewheel.
Superbe Pro freehub systems were available with both 7 and 8 speeds. It was also indexed, but as T-Mar mentioned, some would argue that the Shimano indexing was better.
It's possible, however, that this set-up wasn't available until the early 90s, I'm not exactly sure.
