Try rotating the reader inward towards the spokes, and sliding both the reader and magnet downward towards the hub. You should be able to get it to work. You might have to mount the reader on a wood block or something to get it to stick out more.

I use the distance feature a lot on my trail rides...helps with directions on unfamiliar trails.
