Specificity is king.
Sometimes the goal of a race is to finish standing up. I have found that I can do multiple races during the year with no problem if I don't go fast enough to hurt myself (i.e., push for a PR every time). I still get my heart rate up between 80-85% so I'm not taking it easy, just easier.
