Friction shifters for a 9-speed

My right (9-speed) Ultegra shifter just crapped out and I don't feel like spending a whole lot of money to replace it. It is for a commuter bike. I have some 105 down tube shifters I could possibly use if they will pull the cable far enough to shift through all 9 gears. They are indexed (probably 7-speed) but I would use them in the friction mode. If they are in the friction mode, do you think they would work as a cheap fix?
