Shimano makes, or used to make, front hubs with some kind of "power modulation" for their rollerbrakes. I'm not sure how it works. Sheldon Brown was not a fan. I actually have one of these hubs, and have had no problem with it, but I must admit I haven't used it very much. I haven't noticed anything special or exotic about it.
