I don't buy into this idea that a rear suspension with no suspension up front results necessarily in any strange riding sensations or cognitive dissonance. With the black elastomer on the short-travel Thudbuster, the suspension is tight but supple. Perhaps I'd feel a mismatch with the long-travel model?

But as you say, a fat under-inflated tire up front will smooth things for the hands. On my Swift, I've also installed the longer stem-riser, which changes the angle of my spine a few degrees, taking a bit of the weight off of my hands and shifting it to the back-end.
