Hello folks,
Wow - thanks so much for all your responses!
The problem I had with the Campy brakes was indeed the recessed mounting that wouldn't fit through the hole in the frame. Now, why didn't I think of swapping the front & back brake and attaching as suggested? Doh!! It did cross my mind to start drilling big wonky hole in the back of the frame. Yikes!
So, as they didn't fit, I didn't even consider the reach before returning them, so thanks for the advice, as with hindsight they did look a tad on the short side. These Tektro brakes look great though. I've had a look for them on tinternet and it seems they've been superceeded by the R538, which also look super. Excellent. And thanks for the the nail polish remover tip (I had visions of hours spent with superfine glass paper and a dull finish..)
Now, I had thought my Elan was a '74 model as seven and four are the last 2 digits on the serial number under the bottom bracket. Is this the right way to identify the year of manufacture on Peugeot's? As for the Weinmann brakes, they may well have been swapped over from Mafac's by the previous owner, who knows?.. The Tekro seem to be the way to go today though..
Thanks so much for all your help and advice folks! It's greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Ewan
