As a hunter I have to say if they really were upset just because you were there, screw'em. They can go buy some property, get a lease on private property, or stay home if they don't want to share a public area.
As for riding that area during hunting season. Hunting is statistically much safer than cycling. Throw on a bright orange vest and go enjoy the Fall.
