Your "after" pictures have the bike pointed the other way. Were you able to get any of that surface rust off of the chainwheel? I find that a scouring pad and Zud or Comet is good for that. Sometimes steel wool helps too. I am sure it isn't hurting anything - just curious if you tried.
No, I haven't had an opportunity to try to scrub it up to remove some of the surface rust. Its on my "to do" list for this upcoming week. I'll be sure to post some photos once I've worked on it though. Thanks for the suggestion.
