Yes, but cardboard boxes can be tossed out or folded up.
It's easier to put the bicycle in a van
without a box or case ... it takes up a lot less room than with a box or case.
I've travelled from coast to coast in NA with my bicycle in a vehicle, plus Rowan's bicycle, plus a whole heap of camping gear ... we couldn't have done that if our bicycles had been in cases.
