The serfas case is large, but may fit in a car depending on what else you are taking. To give you a rough idea, it does fit in the back of an NYC cab, but does not leave room for anything else!

I would second the idea of shipping it. A buddy of mine recently shipped his bike for a really low rate. By the time you have dealt with the unbelievable charges the airlines will charge you with just for flying with a bike, you may find it cheaper to ship it (saves the hassle of the airport as well).
