That's what we did. We had a Cannondale and eventually upgraded almost every part on the bike. This Summer, we bought a Calfee frame and put the upgraded parts from the Cannondale on it. Now, the Cannondale is back to its original parts with 37 tires. We're using it as an off-road, winter bike.

Since I didn't particularly like the build kits available for the Calfee and the dealers weren't willing to discount the parts I specified, it was cheaper to get the parts I wanted when there was a sale.
