Winter commuting on a vintage Raleigh 3 speed

I just picked up a mint '74 Raleigh Superbe 3 speed, with plans of making it my winter commuting bike. I tested it out today in less than ideal conditions--crazy high winds literally blew me off the road once or twice. Has anyone had experience riding a Raleigh 3 speed in winter, and if so, how did it hold up? I'm concerned a bit about the heaviness and the slowness of the bike. I live in Toronto, if it helps--no major amounts of snow, but a lot of salt on the roads and wind.

The rest of the year I ride a Bianchi Milano, which I'm in love with but refuse to ruin in the salt. Maybe I'm just too used to how it rides?
