Thanks to everyone who replied. I think I'll be getting some Mavic XM719's [32H plenty strong with a zero dish wheel at the rear]. These rims will serve two purposes - moderate duty touring on paved roads and also get used for unloaded MTBing. If I ever manage to free up some time for a really long expedition tour [extended duration, unpaved roads & heavy load] I'll replace them with something beefier.

I do like Rigida carbide rims that Thorn sells. They seem to solve the issue of braking surfaces wearing out, but the fact you need to use a specific type of brake pad no LBS will sell defeats most of the benefit.
