With my bikes (particularly the commuter and the mountain bike) in winter through to spring, I clean and lube the chain every 500 km with Rock 'n Roll Gold. During summer and into autumn (fall) because this is a very dry period here, I go to 1000 km between services.

I really don't see the point in waiting for sounds of a dry chain, to me cleaning and applying lube is about preventative maintenance.
