Your BB is binding because the shell is 26 TPI and the BB is 24 TPI.

I figured if the shell was 26tpi the BB would bind after a couple turns. The OP seems to be saying that it's threading easily almost all the way in. But anyway, your technique is pretty inspired. I'm going to wind up doing that on an old Grand Prix, I'm sure.
