My Specialized Hardrock is an older model circa 2002 which have the set up for a pannier rack with disc mount pannier rack only. I've tried the Topeak disc mount rack and I was told it shall fit properly. Upon installation, I found that bolts on the bottom to hook up rack is really close or on the quick release lever. I ended up returning the rack and been riding with just my Timbuk2. My question is: Are there any NEW commuter bikes out there (prefer with gears) under the price of $300.00? This bike must have rear eyelets to mount pannier rack and room for fenders. I can't seem to find any GOOD quality bike for that price range for NEW. I don't want to go to a department store to pick up one of those one size fit all and heavy bikes that will probably give you a headache once it has problems. I had trouble finding the size and fit on Ebay so I gave that up. Craigslist is hard to find something used and usually when I call for the bike, it's SOLD!! Need help to find a commuter bike soon to make my commute more enjoyable and easier than the Specialized hardrock. Thank you for reading my posting. Please Help!

well, you can get a Dawes Lightning sport for under 300... pros: it has eyelets for fenders and rack, the frame is steel and the bike is durable cons: it has stem shifters and drops (its a touring/road bike).
and the seat is kinda hard...
