One observation about your OP that is a little unsettling... the 'removing my earbuds that I use as an MP3 player...' I like music too but I NEVER would wear sound gear in my ears. Everyday I pass runners, walkers, dog walkers, kid walkers, and BIkers, wearing MP3 players and me, ringing my bell and shouting 'passing left.' and they do not respond. Safety is key out there. Be aware. Just my two cents (*plink plink*)
May I suggest reading the full post and checking the links before imposing your own safety rules on others? Had you done so, there are a few things you may have noticed.
"The first part of my ride is powerlines, and then I get into some truck & ATV trails.
Then you say

Where does this happen? Bike paths? Sidewalks? Multi-use paths? I've NEVER seen a single runner, walker, dog walker or kid walker out there. I don't think I've ever even seen another cyclist. The only vehicles I ever encounter are 4x4 trucks and ATVs, and even these are extremely rare after dark. Headphones or not, you hear and see them coming.
When was the last time you saw someone pushing a stroller, or jogging, through stuff like this? Especially miles into the woods, well after dark?
So, while I wish I could say I appreciate your concern for my safety, it appears more to me that your nannying is misplaced.
