Today I rode an 09 Tarmac Comp in a 52. Ugh. The crappy 105 crankset was distracting. I kept wanting to sit off the back of the saddle, but then my knees weren't in the right place. There was about 2cm of spacers and a 100mm stem. The bars were too wide for me, but not horrible. I definitely wanted a longer stem, and I also felt that at least half of the spacers needed to come out.
Of course, it rode like a comp level frame. The only time I felt a little bit comfortable was out of the saddle accelerating. I felt like I could get over the front end better and more stable out in front of the BB than on the Roubaix. However, the bike was not that responsive and rode like crap compared to my S-works. It doesn't have the same carbon or the same wide BB area, etc. But maybe for racing, the Tarmac's front end will work for me.
Having gotten back on a comp frame, I am feeling better about not spending over $800 fixing up my comp frame. I just wouldn't want to ride it over the S-works. At least mine fit me.
They were out of the 09 Roubaix, but even with the different head tube design and the new carbon layup, I do not think I would see a favorable difference in the 2009 Pro Roubaix vs. the 2008 Roubaix S-works SL. I think I would probably like the SL2 more, but that is not an option.
A friend who works at the shop is letting me ride his 54cm white 09 Tarmac Pro SL tomorrow. He has no stack, so I may feel as stretched out as on the 2007 S-works SL with the shorter head tube, but at least I could get an idea about fit vs the 52 and the ride.
After day 1 of test riding, I do not want to get the crash replacement, nor do I want to fix my old Comp frame. We'll see how the ProSL rides...
