I've a 105 group throughout and honestly my shifting between my 50 and 39 rings is super smooth. If I know I'm heading into territory where 30 might be an option (>15%) then I'll start the climb in my 30 but dial it way up the cassette in say a 16 or 17T. Still I'm gonna give the compact a try one of these days to satisfy my curiousity.
