Normally, like any other malicious and inappropriate comments made to the Tandem Cycling area I would simply report your posting to the list moderators and ask that it be removed along with any subsequent replies that good people like BigH felt compelled to provide.

No, it doesn't provide the instant self-gratification that shooting off a reply with a sharply worded smart-aleck personal attack does, but it's a small sacrifice that one must make in a civil society. And, no, adding an friendly emoticon after a ugly statement does not magically transform an ugly remark into humor anymore than adding, "just kidding" or when talking about someone else, "bless their heart" does in a public forum with people whom you are unfamiliar.

However, that said and in that the subject line is likely to unwittingly draw the attention of others like yourself from outside the Tandem Cycling area, let me take this opportunity to remind you and others of the posting guidelines for BikeForums that you agreed to when you subscribed. Note, I have highlighted the most relevant points so as to reduce the task load for our short-attention span readers:

Our General Principles

We expect that all members of BikeForums will behave in a way that’s conducive to the diversity, intelligence and respectfulness of the community. Each of these three general principles is fundamental to the quality of our site.

Diversity... We’re a community of cyclists, from different backgrounds and with different perspectives on sports and life. At all times, we expect our members to respect that.

Intelligence... We’re a community with quality standards and expect our members will make a sincere effort to contribute their thoughts on interesting subjects in a meaningful and respectful manner. Posting messages and otherwise interacting on BikeForums is completely optional; many members often prefer to just read what others have to say. But if you do post, we expect that you’ll be respectful of the time of others by posting meaningfully.

Respectfulness... We expect our member to show respect for others. Respecting their person, their views, their time and their opinions, and their belief systems ... even if you disagree with them.

Basic Guidelines

The following six categories of online conduct are unacceptable at BikeForums and constitute a violation of our Community Standards which may result in warning, suspension or loss of membership:

Harrassment... Harassment occurs when a member insults, attacks, and denigrates another member at any time. We have zero tolerance for taking an argument about a any topic to a personal level. For instance, the use of terms such as "idiot, moron, stupid" and other derogatory terms constitutes harassment. The idea is to make this a pleasant environment to discuss cycling, not a schoolyard, or name-calling and rock-throwing festival. Repeated critical and sharply negative posts toward a forum member can also constitute harassment.

Disruption... Posts which intend to disrupt the topic of conversation or steer the topic away from the focus of the forum and related news. Disruption can include harassment, multiple user profiles, multiple posting of the same post and posting completely off topic messages. Please do your best when it comes to grammar, punctuation and spelling. Consistent use of "AOL'ese" and "hAx0r" talk can be very disruptive.

Vulgarity... As a community with a diverse variety of members and readers, we ask that our members to post without using vulgarity. Vulgarity not only includes vulgar language and pictures but also sexist, racist, anti-religious and homophobic language which may offend other members. In addition, the "masking" of vulgarity by inserting * or another keystroke in place of one or more letters in a vulgar term is unacceptable in most cases.

Solicitation... Refrain from using BikeForums to advertise your site, items for sale, commercial services or website. You may attach a short link to your site within your profile or signature. Feel free to also post a link, and short description of your site in our "Shameless Promotions" forum.

Spamming... Spamming is the multiple posting of an identical or similar post on one or more of our Forums. Spam is also flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services.

Copyrighted Material... You may post links to appropriate articles but posting articles from other sources in their entirety is a violation of our Forum Guidelines. If you must repost quotes or sentences, please credit the source.

Please bear in mind that these are only guidelines; there is always a "grey area" and we understand that. Please also keep in mind that the the moderators' decision is final.

Signatures

Signature Images should not exceed 70 pixels in height and 500 pixels in width. If you have more then one image in your signature, the combined size should not go over 70 x 500.

Signatures and avatars are subject to the same basic guidelines above.
Interested readers may want to book mark the actual posting for future reference or use in dealing with list members who feel compelled to engage in inappropriate behavior:
