The local Chrysler factory where I live will close for good in 5 weeks and although I feel bad about the local economy and the folks who will be laid off I'm not going to run out and buy a Dodge Durango. It all comes down to value and there are successful LBS's who have found business models that work but I am not going to pay 100% mark up when I know with bit more effort and research I can get a much better deal off the internet. I am not going to subsidize my LBS any more than the local GM or Ford dealership (or supermarket, clothes store, electronics store etc.). Do you look for the best deal when buying a car shopping for groceries, buying electronics? Last I checked Circuit City declared bankruptcy today and GM and Ford closed at 60 year lows so it's pretty obvious where failed business models lead to.
