As for the comments... I am just tired of people here who just arbitrarily make judgements without knowing the situation. That someone must hate their bike because they left it locked up somewhere. That someone without brakes is reckless or stupid....etc etc etc. Most of the time I can't be bothered to respond to this thread anymore but when a friend is involved I couldn't resist.
That really sucks. When I was out in the ambulance, we picked up injured cyclists all the time and, being a cyclist myself, I would insist that they not only lock up the bike but tell a family member or friend where the bike was (when they were calmed down and at the hospital, obviously). More often than not, I would get the cops on scene to throw the bike in their trunk, insuring that the person could get their bike at a later date.
I can only imagine the suckage that occurs when you are released and then you go to get your bike and it is stripped or gone. I wish I had some decent parts to offer up but it sounds like it was a nicer build than I have on hand...
